BUILD NEW TOWN CENTER AND LIBRARY WITH PRIVATE FUNDS

BUILD NEW TOWN CENTER AND LIBRARY WITH PRIVATE FUNDS

After the ballot measure last year resolved that the Library should not be located in the Park, the Town Council appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to determine location, size and content of buildings. Housed within the Town Center are the Police Department, Public Works, Building Department and the Library, located in one or more buildings. A designer has been working to determine three options and locations. These are going under review by public meetings in various homes of Atherton residents. Upon a final decision, the Committee will go through the engineering and design process.

My primary concern is the potential negative impacts of the improvements Caltrains is making. Caltrains will electrify present tracks; the construction and operation of the High Speed Train will produce sound and vibration.

Construction on the first segment in the Fresno area has started. I will help work with the Ad Hoc Committee to be certain it has considered these possible impacts throughout the process and before finalizing the detail designs of the structures.

The construction is estimated to cost several million dollars. The Library already has several million set aside to meet the new Library cost. The Building Department has funds set aside from building fees to help fund the cost. The buildings' costs will be financed by funds received from private sources. If elected I will facilitate the effort of raising these private funds.
